5/27/2004 Evil Cult Reviewed in the Portland Mercury The hero is Neil Stryker (Rob Taylor)--a skinny cross between Snake Plissken and Steven Segal--who has just rescued a beautiful girl from the clutches of a squeaky-voiced time-traveling scientist. On his way home, this two-fisted loner stumbles into a remote religious cult who have a decidedly EVIL secret. Anyone who doesn't want to join finds himself "brain-melted, mangled, and stuffed in a cage." Therefore it's up to the heroic and salty-talking Stryker to permanently solve the problem, using guns, pruning shears and a swiftly swung ax. Though Evil Cult may be a low-budget affair, and a little draggy in parts (particularly the last 15 minutes), the wacky improvisational nature of the film keeps you interested and laughing. The acting is well above par for this type of movie, and the blood and gore, while plentiful, is ridiculously comical. The theatrical premiere of the best "straight-to-DVD" flick you'll see this year starts this Friday at Sabala's Mt. Tabor theater and it's only three dollars--so if you pass this up to see Raising Helena, you get whatever you deserve. Read the story at the Portland Mercury

1/31/2004 Evil Cult Reviewed on Horrortalk.com |
"Evil Cult shows tremendous promise for a first full length picture. What we have here is a sleek and efficient effort that goes to show what talented newcomers can do with today’s extensive high tech equipment. It may not demonstrate the qualities of big budget affairs, but certainly possesses enough attributes to put most attempts to shame." Read the review. Warning: Spoilers in the review.

Evil Cult Reviewed in Fangoria! |
"The extras give this DVD its merit. There is an audio commentary by the Taylor twins, as well as outtakes and a behind-the-scenes featurette that are sometimes insightful and often hysterical. The behind-the-scenes footage and commentary lend a great deal of insight on how to make a really low-budget horror film, highlighting how they created FX sequences, utilized cheap camera tricks effectively and how they generally got the most out of their limited funds and personnel. Although the splatter is not great, it’s not horrible either, and the disc outlines how they executed various bloody segments step by step. It could prove to be invaluable to anyone looking to create a microbudget horror feature. The most rewarding aspect of the extras is the emergence of the filmmakers’ sense of humor as well as camaraderie. Rob Taylor, in particular, is a real character, showing off his amusing range of vocal abilities and his penchant for off-the-cuff toilet humor. The funniest crew member is Kyle Day, who plays Winston. It is revealed in these extras that he ad-libbed almost every one of his lines, and his natural comic ability is very impressive. The outtakes boast a series of alternate scene takes for which Day spouts off hysterical and spontaneous one-liners." Read the review.

In the article published in the November 25 issue of both the Clackamas Review and the Oregon City News he said, "This is an earnest first film with “late-night cult classic” written all over it; it’s more fun than a lot of recent bloated big-budget releases from the major studios, and shows more promise than many cult horror films that have already attracted followings and launched their creators towards big-studio success."
